As part of a public design project for a 3rd year Landscape Architecture Class, Larch 312, this project is an example of how to develop a play space from concept through fruition with the participation of multiple stakeholders in the community, including School Children, Parent/ Teacher Organization (PTO) members, School Board members, and Borough members. These stakeholders decided to create a Human Sundial at Corel Street Elementary School. As part of a third year landscape architecture course at Penn State University, a group of students worked with Elementary school students from Corel Street Elementary School to design and implement this play space. To increase the level of play and interactive learning, the team decided to include the planetary orbits and their relative distances from the sun within the design. A final report on the project outlines how play typologies, education principles, playground design techniques, children drawings, and material selection all influenced the final design and implementation of the play space.
